Use of Library Resources--Answers

What is a libguide?

The Studzinski Library uses two types of software: Follett Destiny as the library management system and Springshare libguides. If you are a returning student to St. John's, then you will notice a difference in the updated version of the Online Public Access Catalog [OPAC]--Follett Destiny. The updated version allows for searching the catalog for books in the print collection, ebooks, Open Educational Resources [OERs], and resources from the databases to which the library subscribes. The new version also allows for curating (gathering) a collection of resources for your use and possibly for the use of other students in the community.

The Springshare libguide will be your entry into the information resources including the A.E. Studzinski Library at St. John's Prep. Access the library libguide from the SJP portal or bookmark this URL https://stjohnsprep.libguides.com/studzinski

How do I find a book in the library?

If you download the Follett Destiny app to your iPad, then you can search for a book through the app on your iPad. You may also use the library libguide tab [Online Public Access Catalog--OPAC] to search for a book in the Follett Destiny catalog that returns a federated search from the print collection, ebooks, databases, and Open Educational Resources [OER].

Do I need my ID card in the library?

Yes, you do need your ID card in the library. Apart from the SJP requirement to have your ID card with you at all times, you need your ID card to request use of collaborative space or to withdraw a book from the collection. You also need your ID card to access the printer queue with the library copier.

Do I need a Boston Public Library [BPL] ecard?

How do I find an article from a database in the library?

In the Studzinski Library libguide homepage, go to the A to Z Databases. Select a database that would suit your research goals. The PowerSearch will search through approximately 53 databases and will return a variety of content items.

Library Policies--Answers

What are the hours of the library?

May I request space to work on a group project?

Yes, several spaces will be available for group/collaborative work. You will find the scheduling form on the Studzinski libguide.

May I bring food and drink into the library?

No, in keeping with the SJP school policy, you may not have food and drink outside designated spaces for eating and drinking. The reason for this policy is not draconian. Keeping the library clean protects surfaces and electronics for academic and leisure use of library resources by the school community. The Studzinski Library supports the wording from The Student Handbook: "Food is not to be taken from the dining hall to other areas of campus at any time, unless students are invited to lunch with faculty in different areas of the campus. When eating in any location, the student is responsible for disposing of his trash and cleaning the area before leaving. Students are prohibited from carrying in or consuming food and drink in the library, computer labs, and all other academic buildings (including hallways) during the school day" (pp. 37-38).

Is there a noise policy in the library?

Yes, signage will designate the three levels of noise to allow all students access to their library preferences for academic activity: silent, quiet, and collaborative. To meet the needs of all Studzinski patrons, respect the noise level assigned to each area:

Noise

Policy

Place

Silent

no talking--individual work [e.g. homework, reading, thinking, digital work]

Study Carrels

Quiet

whispering/low voice about work [e.g. consulting on work, short term tutoring, inquiring about assignment]

Tables in Center of Library

Collaborative

group work [limit to four students working together] requires talking but no excessive noise that would disturb other patrons [e.g. group study, group project]

Chairs and tables along Summer Street

Polimeno Room--by request

According to the School Library Association, a school library has a variety of purposes:

  • to provide a flexible space with a wide and inclusive range of resources to support learning and teaching throughout the school.
  • to have a vibrant role in the development of a culture that promotes wider reading, motivated readers and learners for life.
  • to provide a place for collaborative learning, creativity, and for developing independent research and information literacy skills.

May I use headphones in the library?

Yes, you may use headphones in the library, but no one should hear the audio from your headphones. For your own comfort and the sake of the students around you, keep the volume low.

May I play games on my iPad or laptop in the library?

No, the library is a game-free zone. The A.E. Studzinski Library follows SJP policy about Internet use: "All use of the Internet through the School will be for School purposes only." (Student Handbook, p. 59).
